Between 2020 and 2022, Texas State Galleries received 44 works of art from Dr. Timothy Woolsey, Professor Emeritus of Music at Texas State University. These works, a selection of which are displayed in this exhibition, join the 120 works already given by Dr. Woolsey to Texas State Galleries since 2014, when he began donating artwork from his collection to the university.

Private collections often reflect their collectors in meaningful ways, and Dr. Woolsey's collection is no exception. His interests include, but are not limited to, the acquisition of works on paper, especially those that push the boundaries of their medium or genre. For instance, some of the "drawings" in this exhibition are sculpted, and the traditional landscapes are complemented by an equal number of abstract or psychological environments.

Comprising approximately two-thirds of the Texas State Galleries permanent collection, Dr. Woolsey’s contributions are its anchor. The objects within it are ideal for instructing student artists and serve as models for applying the foundational skills acquired in school to the development of one's own unique art practice. Furthermore, the collection is frequently utilized by the Galleries’ student workers, who assist with research and collection management. This selection of recent gifts was curated by Joolia, a senior Studio Art major. Research and writing for the exhibition labels were provided by spring 2023 Texas State Galleries interns Amelie Esquivel and Avery Fuerst.
